Amberline will be releasing their new album 1998 of the 16th on May and we’ve been privileged enough to hear what they got in store.
With this 5 piece punk/pop outfit having a fare few gig lined up over the next 3 months (which you can check out for the link below) and to me a simple but interesting album title I was quite excited to sit down and listen to this one through.
From the off your hit with that punk pop infused intro of chunky guitars building to the inevitable climax of thumping bass drums and distorted guitar chords but what stuck out the most during my listen was the distinctively unusual sound of the singer Mark Steggall’s voice, although the band have that sound reminiscent to bands such as Blink 182,four year strong and New Found Glory, a unique difference is that of the vocal tone and quality of their singer.
Beautifully displayed in songs such as A.D.U.S and I’m Dave Mustaine,You’re Metallica, he has this quality very similar to that of Brian Molko of Placebo but at the same time keeping that American sound of pop punk that sheens a lot of British bands of the same genre.
The album highlight for me though was “Soundtrack Of My Life” loud, energetic which I could immediately see going down a storm when being played live. Pounding drums mixed with crunchy up and down power chords that you cant help but head bang to.
Overall the album gels very well with its apathetic and angst filled lyric’s about love/lost a theme that flows throughout the album, it typically merges pop melodies with speedy punk tempos, at the same time crowd pleasing chants and a unique sounding frontman.
The album is very well produced and with that combined with 5 very talented musicians it makes not only listening to 1998 a joy to any fan of the genre but makes you want to experience it first hand.
