Album Reviews: Ghost In The Static - Open Eyed Dreamer Part 1: Revelation
by Leon
Let's be honest. When you think of Surrey, you probably think of snobby kids prancing around in overpriced Jack Wills shirts, hair cut daily at Toni & Guy, nibbling at a butternut squash and horrifically over-pronouncing every syllable of sentences like 'Yah, Mumma and Puppa only gave me £500 to spend today, they're, like, such cheapskates', or 'WHAT'S THAT?! TIMOTHY'S FAMILY ONLY OWN ONE YACHT! LIKE, O-M-G! I BET THEY DON'T EVEN HAVE A BUTLER!'....and so on. Sorry. I hate Jack Wills kids. But anyway, probably the last thing that comes to mind when you think of Surrey is moody, bleak, electronica-infused industrial metal – music tailor-made for fans of Rammstein and Nine Inch Nails, music with cinematic vision (think The Matrix, Equilibrium and so on), an album best consumed as a whole rather than individual tracks (a real rarity these days). But that's what we have here.
Ethereal and haunting in places, crushingly heavy in others, it comes across as more of an experience than a mere product – and, as a real bonus for those of you who like to 'try before you buy' (and in 2011, who doesn't?), you can preview the album in its entirety at Ghost In The Static's Bandcamp page here. And if you like it (and if you're still reading this, you probably will), you can buy it for a fiver. That's it. A fiver. Don't look for it on a torrent site. Mug an old lady if you have to, or use every ounce of your willpower to *not* buy Front magazine. You know you only buy it to look at tits. And you're on the internet! Just go to Google and look up 'tits', look at them, save your money, and pay for the album. You might have to turn 'Safesearch' off though. Unless Mummy won't let you.
I realise I've not spent much of this review going into detail about Ghost In The Static's music, but hopefully you've already gone to the above link and are listening for yourself. It's epic, haunting, and awesome. Keep listening. These guys have big plans.
