Gig Reviews: Buck 65@Hoxton Bar & Kitchen 21/02/11
by tastesofink
He was opened for by Hyperpotamus, who recorded loops of his own singing, beatboxing etc like a sharp-dressed, Spanish Beardyman to create strange and hip-hoppy, futuristic soul. I’d never seen him before but it certainly got the crowd amped for Buck.
Buck was dressed as if for a funeral, and accompanied by a beautiful, slightly eighties-looking singer Marnie Herald, who effortlessly covered all the female vocal parts, including one in French.
Tender and raucous, the set encompassed his inimitable, lyrical story-telling and the first time I’ve ever really noticed somebody scratching on the turntables wearing a wedding band. Just as I noticed this he performed the Dirtbike song ‘She said yes’ about his proposal to his wife.
He played a strange homage to Bronski Beat’s Smalltown Boy that was missed from his album (‘Displayed desire. Played with fire. Everything is said and done. When trouble comes looking for you again, you better run.’) as well as crowd favourites; Blood of a Young Wolf, Centaur, Paper Airplanes, Zombie Apocalypse. His encore rapping over Venus in Furs was mind-blowing.
I can’t remember the name of the tune he explained the verses had been written without allowing for breathing but that was something I have to hear again.
Everything they played off the new album made me want to go out and get a copy of 20 Odd Years. I suggest you all do too.
