Gig Reviews: Swallowing The Seas, Proud Galleries, Camden, 16/2/10
by Leon
On an unassuming rainy evening in Camden I arrived at the Proud Galleries to check out a band described to me previously as 'epic', 'rulebreaking', and 'awesome'. A band that defy logic and rules, the farthest cry possible from Ke$ha, Cheryl Cole and whatever other **** is in the charts. Big words, that of course came from a fan of the band – but so passionate was he, I was convinced to make the lengthy trek and go see what the fuss was about.
So the question is, did the band deliver on their fan's promise?
In a word, yes. Yes yes yes yes yes! Opening the set with a tune blending the odd time signatures of prog with grungy and effected guitars, plus a violin adding melodic goodness on top of a high-energy (and high volume....I really should have taken earplugs, I write this half-deaf) performance Swallowing The Seas refuse to hold back and ease us into their sonic world. The set continued with pretty ambient soundscapes and vocal harmonies providing many a false sense of security before the exceptionally loud and passionate guitars kicked back in, leaving listeners bewildered and breathless. This is a band that demand repeated listens, given their penchant for odd times and, yes, generally rulebreaking style. You can check them out here, by the way. I left with the feeling that I may have found a new favourite band. You might too.
Swallowing The Seas. Epic, rulebreaking, awesome. Spread the word!
