Gig Reviews: Gruff Rhys @ Norwich Art Centre 20/02/11
by gingerben
On a freezing cold Sunday night in February where wooly hats, jumpers & beards gather together to see the only person to make the wooly hat, jumper & beard look surprisingly cool, Gruff Rhys holds a surf & beach theme! Well what else would you expect from a man who has declaired himself a 'kleptomaniac' and a lover of hotel toiletries! His new album 'Hotel Shampoo' is a wonderful collection of cheerful soft pop songs to melt your heart.
With the help of his welsh friends 'Y Niwl' providing the surf feel to start the night (their music is an entirely vocal free mix of bech boys/shadows/doors stylee) Gruff enters with his usual aray of props. From a record player & large audience prompt signs to musical instrument inventing, he has it all. With birds tweeting throughout his 1hr 45min set, the Super Furry Animal frontman provides us all with heartfelt melodies old and new as well as many pause filled chats with the crowd. 'Hotel Shampoo' is a truely brilliant album that makes me forget about the chores of work and how it could be summer rather than winter outside.
Thanks Gruff, will catch up more with you no doubt at the summer festivals...
