Gig Reviews: Placebo @ Brixton Academy (22nd April 2003)
by Charlotte Smith
This Tueday night, played to a packed Brixton Academy, sold out many weeks before, playing the first of two nights with Placebo playing the last venue on their European tour.
An hour late with the fans getting equally edgy, exited and impatient, on stepped a short haired Brian Malko, in black from head to foot, black shirt and tight black trousers.
As expected a roar errupted from the crowd as they took to the stage. Amazingly, it was announced that bassist Stephan Olsdal was heroically playing the entire gig with a broken arm!
This night was however marked by the death of Nina Simone, and as a mark of respect, Placebo dedicated the song 'Centrefolds' to the Jazz Lengend.
The gig was as expected extremely good, being a huge placebo fan myself they wouldnt have been able to do much to dissapiont me. I had never seen Placebo playing live before, When Brian first started sinning I was shocked, his voice is very different live its much harsher, in my opinion anyway.
The band started the perfomance with a lot of music from the new album 'Sleeping With Ghosts', I felt that they also played a lot of random songs that aren't that well known, givving the impression that they were bord with playing the same stuff in concert over and over again.
I was dissapointed that they diddnt play a few more of there more popular songs like 'Nancy boy', although they did play Pure Morning.
As part of their encore Placebo played a tribute to the Pixies, stating 'We wish we'd written this song!', playing the Placebo interpretation of the Pixies song 'Where is my mind', which went down very well with an already raucous crowd.
